The Sankofa 2023 Pilgrimage was a two-week immersion experience that would provide all participants the chance to ‘Sankofa,’ to go back, fetch the past, retrieve it, and learn from it. Traveling to another country can be a scary endeavor – especially if you’ve rarely ever done it before. However, I can safely say that the time I spent in Bogotá, Colombia with the Community of St. Paul was a life-changing experience for me. Through the work of the Office for World Mission, I was able to make connections with people thousands of miles from home, and I am so grateful to have been invited to participate in the “Pilgrimage to Bogotá with the Community of St. Paul.”

As we think about what that means in light of our faith, we cannot fully understand it without looking at the role of women in the Bible, like Mary Magdalene. She encountered Jesus when He healed her from demons. After this initial encounter, she became a faithful follower of Jesus and continued to be loyal even after the Crucifixion. Throughout her life, Mary Magdalene took action by caring for Jesus and the disciples. However, she also took time to intently listen and be present with Jesus. Luke Ch. 10:39: ‘Mary sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.’
